Turtle Beach Recon 70 vs HyperX Cloud Stinger: Design

Turtle Beach Recon 70 is available in various color variants, some of which are specifically designed to suit the color themes of gaming consoles. For example, there is the black and green model that suits Xbox, black and blue for PlayStation, as well as black and red for Nintendo Switch.

This headset is mostly plastic, yet it feels fairly sturdy. The fit sliders can be adjusted easily in clicks. The fit is snug yet comfy. Inside each ear cup is a 40mm audio driver. And thanks to the plastic construction, Turtle Beach Recon 70 feels lightweight and can be worn continuously without fatiguing the top of your head.

The ear pads have a reasonable amount of padding. However, these ear pads are covered in synthetic leather, so they may get a bit hot after some time. You can avoid the issue by taking the headset off from time to time.

HyperX Cloud Stinger is much more rudimentary. It is composed of black plastic with adjustable metallic sliders for fitting. However, it is also available in the pink color variant, which can be your choice if you prefer such a bright and cheerful look over the standard plain black.

The ear cups can swivel 90 degrees to turn the headset flat. This is really useful for storage. The overall construction feels solid, though the hinges that rotate the ear cups are a little bit flimsy. HyperX Cloud Stinger is armed with 50mm audio drivers and memory foam ear pads that are covered in leatherette. Interestingly, it remains comfy even after a few hours of continuous gaming.

Turtle Beach Recon 70 vs HyperX Cloud Stinger: Features

On Turtle Beach Recon 70’s left ear cup, you can find the flip-up microphone and the cable. Neither is detachable. However, you can flip the mic when you don’t want to use it, and this will also mute it. There is also a volume dial on the left ear cup, which is easy to access.

Turtle Beach Recon 70 uses a 3.5mm audio cable, so it is technically compatible with pretty much any device and gaming console currently available. However, the cable is rather short, so you may want to get a splitter with a decent length in order to use it with your computer. This is not an issue if you are playing on a gaming console or mobile device, in which case the audio jack is much closer to you.

HyperX Cloud Stinger is quite similar. It also has a non-detachable microphone and cable. However, the microphone is pretty long and thick – a good thing because the length helps to minimize the proximity effect, a bad thing because the mic doesn’t really hide from view. Anyhow, you can flip the mic to mute, too, and there will be a distinct click to tell you that the mic is muted. The volume dial is also on the left ear cup.

HyperX Cloud Stinger uses a 3.5mm audio cable, too, and there is a nice length here. It has universal compatibility; it can work with Windows, macOS, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Still, you need a splitter to use the headphones and microphone on your computer. Read also: Turtle Beach Recon 70 VS Razer Kraken X here.

Turtle Beach Recon 70 vs HyperX Cloud Stinger: Microphone

Turtle Beach Recon 70 has a very good microphone quality. It is fair to say that the microphone here is better than what you find on more expensive headsets with two or three times the price. The microphone consistently delivers voice with excellent crispness and detail.

Perhaps the only issue with Turtle Beach Recon 70’s microphone is the weak gain. The sound tends to be weak and quiet. As a result, you will need to adjust your microphone volume in your game.

HyperX Cloud Stinger also has an excellent microphone. It is about the same quality as Turtle Beach Recon 70. The sound from HyperX Cloud Stinger’s microphone is always crisp, articulate, and easy to hear. It can even capture a deep voice with decent clarity.

What makes HyperX Cloud Stinger’s microphone better is the louder gain. It is not too weak, so you probably won’t need to tweak your microphone settings. It also resists the proximity effect really well.

Turtle Beach Recon 70 vs HyperX Cloud Stinger: Performance

The performance of Turtle Beach Recon 70 is actually really good. The 40mm drivers are able to deliver solid bass. The lows are punchy and well-defined. This headset is suitable for pretty much any game genre, but it is particularly great for action-packed games.

Turtle Beach Recon 70 has enough mids and highs to make dialogues and soundtracks properly audible. However, the bass sometimes masks the mid-range and treble, especially in intense scenes. This may reduce the immersion somewhat.

Overall, Turtle Beach Recon 70 is still fairly accurate and balanced. It can be used for music. It won’t sound really breath-taking, as it lacks power in most vocals and musical instruments, but it is not bad, either.

On the other hand, the performance of HyperX Cloud Stinger is noticeably better. Interestingly, it has a wider frequency response range than most headsets, as it can reach as low as 18 Hz and as high as 23 kHz. As a result, the soundstage can feel very wide and vivid.

The bass is really solid and punchy. HyperX Cloud Stinger makes low-frequency sound effects really pop and enjoyable. But there is also a good audio separation so that you can hear dialogues, audio cues, and soundtracks clearly. Furthermore, there is no distortion or reduction in audio quality when you push the volume up.

HyperX Cloud Stinger works great for music, too. Although you probably don’t want to wear it in public, the headset is great for private listening at home. The sound is balanced and detailed. Vocals have good presence, and musical instruments come out with excellent depth and resonance.
